Privacy Policy
Summary
CSS Top Sites is an editorial site about CSS background techniques. It does not sell personal data, does not require an account to read content, and does not run user-targeted email lists. The data the site does see comes from standard web logs, optional analytics, and the third-party advertising network described below.
Information we collect
Information you provide
The only direct way to send personal information to the site is by emailing the address shown on the contact page. When you do, your message and the email address you sent it from are kept long enough to handle the request and any follow-up.
Information collected automatically
When a browser requests a page, the hosting infrastructure logs technical metadata required to serve the request and protect the site from abuse. This typically includes the IP address, requested URL, HTTP referer, user-agent string, and a timestamp. Logs are retained for a short, finite period and are not used to build user profiles.
If analytics is enabled on the site, it is used in aggregate — page views, referrer breakdowns, country-level geography — to understand which pages are useful and which are not. Analytics is not used to identify individuals.
Cookies
The site itself sets at most a small number of strictly necessary first-party cookies (for example, to remember a code-block "copied" state on tools pages within a session). It does not set first-party tracking cookies.
Third-party cookies may be set by Google AdSense (if ads are shown), by analytics, and by embedded resources such as font CDNs. See the cookies page for the categories in use, what they do, and how to turn them off in your browser.
Google AdSense and ad personalization
This site participates in the Google AdSense program. Google, as a third-party vendor, uses cookies and similar identifiers to serve ads on this and other sites.
Google may use the DoubleClick cookie and other Google identifiers to show ads to users based on their visits to this site and other sites on the internet. Users may opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. More information about how Google uses data from sites or apps that use its services is available at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites and Google's general advertising policies at policies.google.com/technologies/ads.
Where required (for example, in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland), the site uses a consent mechanism so that personalized advertising is only shown to users who have opted in. Users can change or withdraw consent at any time through the site's consent control.
Other third-party services
- Hosting / CDN. The site is served via a standard web hosting provider that logs requests as described above.
- Analytics. If analytics is enabled, it is used in aggregate; anonymization features are turned on where the provider supports them.
- Search verification. Files such as
BingSiteAuth.xmlare used to prove ownership of the domain to search engines and do not collect data themselves. - Embedded resources. Font and icon CDNs may receive your IP address as part of fetching those assets, the same way any third-party resource on any web page does.
How we use information
- To deliver the requested page and protect the site from abuse and bots.
- To answer email correspondence sent to the contact address.
- To understand, in aggregate, which content is useful and which needs improvement.
- To show advertising, including personalized advertising where the user has consented.
Data retention
Server logs are kept for a short period sufficient for security and operational purposes and are then deleted or rotated. Email correspondence is kept for as long as needed to respond and to maintain a basic record of any complaint, correction, or privacy request. Analytics retention follows the provider's default, which we keep at the shortest practical setting.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights under the EU/UK GDPR, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA/CPRA), or comparable laws. These typically include the right to:
- Know what personal data is held about you.
- Request access to, correction of, or deletion of that data.
- Object to or restrict certain kinds of processing.
- Withdraw consent for processing that relies on consent (such as personalized advertising).
- Lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
To exercise any of these rights, email the address on the contact page. We will verify the request and respond within the timeframe required by the applicable law.
Children's privacy
The site is a general-audience CSS reference and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
International transfers
Because the site uses third-party services (hosting, advertising, analytics), data may be processed in countries other than the one you connect from. Those providers operate under their own safeguards (Standard Contractual Clauses or equivalent) for international transfers.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the "Last reviewed" date at the top is updated and the change is summarized here. Material changes that affect how we use existing data will be flagged on the site itself for a reasonable period.
